Friday, December 31st, 2010

Some stuff that you bring on ordinary trips are not safe to take when you go out for cruise ship trip. Jewelries and other valuables are some examples of these stuff that are better left at home. It is not recommended that you take them with you due to the number of activities in the cruise that you might want to participate in. If you decide to take expensive things with you, it’s best to plan where you can keep them in your room.

A lot of people nowadays consider things like cameras, laptops and cell phones as necessary. There are times that they are important for business purposes, but if they are not needed, it is best to leave them at home.

Remember to travel light when going for a cruise. Don’t treat the cruise the way you treat travelling by plane. In the plane, you have more storage and also allowed to take more luggages with you. However, staterooms of the cruise ship often have limited space and you also have to share it with other people. The more people you share the room with the greater the possibilities of your stuff to get lost or stolen.

The journey will surely expose you to many beautiful types of scenery and taking pictures of them will make the trip worth remembering. Because of this, you will surely be tempted to bring your expensive camera on the cruise. If you bring your camera, please be aware that there are possibilities that it can get lost. Hence, it is important to make certain that you will not misplace your camera. You can put a sling on it so you can hang it around your neck. Alternatively, you can buy inexpensive cameras so that it wouldn’t hurt that much if you’ll lose it.

Money is also important when you go on a cruise. You can consult your travel agent if it is safe to bring cash with you or if it better if you use plastic monies. Travel checks are not that popular nowadays and experts also debate whether it is safe to use credit card or debit cards on travel. For one, you can argue with the charges once your credit card is stolen. But you can’t do the same with debit cards.

Luxury ship experience is not the same as other trips. You need to be smart in capturing the memories of the entire cruise. Before you go on a cruise, see to it that you have arranged everything up to minute details so as to avoid spoiling the trip.

Bellevue Chiropractor Recounts His “Adventure” On The Carnival Splendor

Monday, December 27th, 2010

No electricity, toilets that did not work, and cold sandwiches’. Sounds more like a bad camping trip than a luxury cruise at sea to the Mexican Riviera. This was the fate that awaited Dr. Michael Weir, and his wife Angela as they boarded the Carnival Splendor last week. “We had been planning this trip for 9 months and were very excited to go on vacation with friends”, said Michael Weir, owner of Back in Action Chiropractic in Bellevue WA.

Sunday afternoon, Dr. Weir, his wife Angela and four other friends boarded the cruise ship not knowing what lay ahead for them as they went out to sea. “Sunday evening was great”, says Dr. Weir. “Great food, and wonderful entertainment. Exactly what you would expect from a cruise.” Six o’clock the next morning they were awoke from a loud rumble and a shaking of the ship. “At first I thought it was just heavy waves, but as soon as the captain came over the loud speaker telling us there was a mechanical problem I knew something big was happening.” The rumble ended up being the main engine of the ship catching fire and then catching all the electrical wiring on fire as well. The engine and electrical fires sent billows of smoke throughout the entire boat. “We had to leave our rooms almost immediately because of the amount of smoke that was flowing through the halls and cabins.”

Dr. Weir explained, “My main concern through the whole ordeal was the sanitation on the boat. Because of my public health courses in school I knew that a major concern in a disaster is the lack of public restrooms. When all of the toilets on the ship would not flush, I knew there could be a problem.” After 12 without flushing toilets, the bathrooms on the main decks were full to overflowing and the smell from the toilets in the staterooms was overwhelming. Eighteen hours after the power went down, the ship was able to regain function of the toilets, and just in time. “I truly felt that we were 3 to 4 hours from a sanitary disaster, if they could not get the toilets to flush.” The toilets were not the only sanitary concern though. “The smell of garbage and rotting food was almost too much to bear. By Thursday they were even putting bags of garbage in the elevators to try and help disperse the smell.”

“I was very impressed with how well the passengers on the boat responded to a bad situation. There could have been pandemonium, but every one stayed very positive. There were even nights that you would not have known that we were stranded at sea, people singing karaoke, dancing, and laughing.” Making lemonade out of lemons is one of Dr. Weir’s life philosophy’s. “We can moan and groan, but in the end that does nothing to change a situation. We had fun in spite of the poor situation.”

Dr. Weir and his family were extremely happy to be home, but maintain that they have no reservations about going on another cruise in the future. “We do not think poorly of Carnival at all. Quite the opposite, they went far out of their way to keep us safe and comfortable in a situation that no one could have expected.”

Dr. Weir is a Bellevue Chiropractor and ownsBack in Action Chiropractic, in Bellevue Washington. He and his wife Angela reside on the Eastside.
