Germany’s Traditional Oktoberfest Has Six Million Visitors Annually

The first Munich Oktoberfest was on 12th October 1810. It was the public celebration event for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (of Bavaria), and Princess Therese from Saxe-Hildburghausen. The event was a horse race, and as it was successful it was held again the next year.

Over time more events were added, and it was decided that Oktoberfest would be held every year. Many of the events are still part of the festival, such as the entry of the brewery horse teams and the beer tent bands, which is held on the first Saturday of the event, and the parade through the centre of Munich to the festival grounds. The parade is led by the Munchner Kindl, a child in costume who represents the city of Munich, and comprises about 8000 people in traditional Bavarian costumes.

The festival grounds are south west from Munich’s town center. The grounds have their own rail (U-Bahn) station. They are named the Theresienwiese, after the Princess from Saxe-Hildburghausen whose marriage started the Oktoberfest tradition.

Nowadays the festival has increased in length (16 to 18 days), and the start date is in September. The festival will always include German Unity Day, which is 3rd October. The next one will be from 17th September to 3rd October 2011.

The Oktoberfest, which is often called the Munich Beer Festival by English speakers, is the largest Volksfest, or People’s Fair, in the world, with over 6 million visitors annually. Approximately 15% or 1 million are non-German. As well as other Europeans there are many Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders.

About 7 million liters of beer are drunk each year, and enormous amounts of food are eaten. As well as the many varieties of German sausage, one may eat chicken, roast pork (Schweinsbraten) and grilled ham (Schweinshaxe). Accompaniments include dumplings (Knodel), cheese noodles (Kasspatzn) and potato pancakes (Reiberdatschi).

It can be extremely overcrowded in the beer tents, and those who are not seated will not usually be served. It is advisable to arrive early, especially at weekends, and do not leave the tent if you wish to return later. Some tents (Hofbrau Festzelt) do have a standing area, so it may be possible to enter these later in the day. There are also open air table, where it is usually possible to get a seat, but the atmosphere and music will not be so good here.

What To Do At Oktoberfest

If you are looking for a party, consider Oktoberfest. It is the biggest fair anywhere. That is, the one in Munich is. There are many Oktoberfests in many locations, but the Munich one is the biggest and many would say the best. Here’s some background on its history and what you can find there.

The original Oktoberfest was a celebration of King Ludwig I of Bavaria’s wedding on October 12, 1810. It was a minor affair, mainly a horse race. The people enjoyed so much that they repeated it a year later, and soon it was a tradition.

An agricultural show was an early addition. Over time they also added carnivals, parades, and many additional attractions. Over the next two hundred years the fair was held most of the time. It was not held when there was a war on. A couple of times cholera epidemics prevented it from happening.

Mention Oktoberfest and many people will think of beer. Beer is a major part of the festival. The special Oktoberfest beer that is sold at the fair has more alcohol than normal German beer. Of course, there will be some drunkenness. However, most people enjoy the beer as one facet of a very rich festival event.

Much of the activity is centered around the beer tents. These huge tents have food as well as beer. Each one has its own specialties, though sausage seems to be a common element. As with the fair, the tents do not charge an entry fee. They are great social centers.

Live music is a key part of the beer tent experience. One will hear a lot of old school Bavarian tunes, but rock bands are becoming more popular. Smoking in the tents is being discouraged and will soon be banned. There are noise limits during the day to try to make things more family friendly, but the party really gets going at night.

The fair has much more than the parades and beer tents. Those who want excitement can try the carnival rides. There are restaurants and food booths and exhibits and so on. The nearby city of Munich has many interesting sites and attractions.

Colditz – An Historic Castle

Colditz Castle is quite possibly best known as a top security POW camp used by the Nazis for the duration of World War II to hold Allied prisoners of war who they thought of as “incorrigible”. Having said that, the castle is more than 800 years old which means there is much more to its heritage than the six years when it was generally known as Oflag IV-C.

Work commenced in the mid 12th century on the imposing castle located on a hill overlooking Colditz in Saxony, Germany. Inside a few years, habitations started to appear in the vicinity of the castle and after close to 250 years, it was sold by the Lords of Coldtiz.

A serious blaze in the early 1500s resulted in significant parts of the castle had to be reconstructed not to mention the city hall, church and significant sections of the city. Over the centuries, restoration and reconstructing building work saw the shape of the castle transform and in the 19th century it was rebuilt once again and made use of as a workhouse and later on a mental facility till 1924.

In 1933, Hitler came to power and converted the castle to a prison for political prisoners of war. Immediately after the start of World War II in 1939, POWs were imprisoned here. It was used to contain top risk prisoners of war who were regarded as dangerous and certainly going to make an attempt to escape. Even though it was a top security pow camp, the nature of the inmates at Oflag IV-C (it’s prison camp name), meant there were several imaginative escape efforts. There was even one plan where POWs plotted to make use of a glider even though it was never attempted as the Allies retook the castle before the escape attempt could be staged.

Colditz was a prisoner of war camp for officers and there were also some well known inmates including the British air ace, Douglas Bader, Patrick Reid who wrote numerous books on Colditz after the war, Airey Neave who was the first officer to escape from the POW camp and was also ultimately elected to the British Parliament, Sir David Stirling who set up the Special Air Service and Charles Upham from New Zealand who was awarded the Victoria Cross and bar. One of the most notable of all was Giles Romilly who was the nephew of Winston Churchill’s wife.

In recent years, Colditz Castle has been refurbished and is open to visitors to see this historic building for themselves.
