The lava eventually sets hard as there is no heat source any more from the volcano.

The Canary Islands still sit on a hot spot and volcanic eruptions do still occur sometimes. In 1730 eruptions happened on Lanzarote which lasted for six years and covered large areas of the island. The volcano is now classed as dormant however the heat it creates can still be felt beneath the surface in some areas.

More recently a new eruption began creating a new island just 70 metres off El Hierro which shot magma and debris high into the air. The magma is within 60 metres of the surface and if it continues to erupt there is a chance it will break the surface and possibly even connect with El Hierro which is currently the smallest of the Canary Islands.
